Kraken was co-founded in 2011 by Jesse Powell, a California State University, Sacramento alumnus, along with Thanh Luu and Michael Gronager. Powell, who had previously worked as a consultant for Mt. Gox to address a security issue, began developing Kraken as a replacement, anticipating the eventual downfall of Mt. Gox. That prediction came true in 2014 when Mt. Gox collapsed following failed security audits. Kraken officially launched in September 2013, initially offering trades in Bitcoin, Litecoin, and euros, before expanding to include additional currencies and margin trading.
